After 11 years as founder/director of The Nature of Words, a central Oregon literary nonprofit based in Bend, Oregon, Ellen Waterston passed the baton in 2012. She wanted to use her experience to help emerging and established nonprofits plan and execute a successful future.
Waterston is not new to the world of consulting. She brings a broad range of experience to her role as chief strategist. Prior to founding The Nature of Words, for thirteen years Waterston, as president of Waterston Communications, Inc., served a wide variety of nonprofit, public and private sector clients across the Northwest with strategic planning, marketing and communications services.
Subsequently The Nature of Words (NOW), launched by Waterston in 2001, grew from a two-day author event to an annual five-day literary festival that hosts acclaimed authors and poets from across the U.S. Over the next decade, the organization finished every year in the black under Waterston’s leadership and expanded to offer year-round creative writing classes to students and adults in NOW’s Bend literary arts center as well as in traditional and alternative educational settings throughout Central Oregon.
Waterston has served on the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Film and Video Commission, Oregon Community Service Commission, and Portland Art Museum Board, as well as numerous Central Oregon committees and boards. She is an award-winning author and poet, (www.writingranch.com ) and a sought-after public speaker.
